Be a Safe Summer Driver: New Data Reveals Speeding Trends for 4th of July

Summer is here, and with it comes increased travel and the potential for more traffic violations. So, we compiled key insights from our proprietary data to help drivers stay safe and avoid costly tickets.

Our analysis reveals July as the clear winner for speeding citations with more than one-million tickets issued during July 2023. This coincides with the average ticketed driver exceeding the speed limit by a concerning 17 mph. Furthermore, more than 32,000 speeding events were captured exceeding 21 mph over the limit, highlighting a significant number of dangerous speeders on the roads.

The 4th of July holiday period also emerged as the top offender for both speeding and red-light violations. In major cities, speeders were clocked at an average of 15-22 mph over the limit, a substantial increase compared to normal days. Additionally, red-light violations peaked on the 4th, with an average exceeding 14 violations per camera location.

Interestingly, the data shows a distinction between speeding and red-light violations across Memorial Day, Labor Day, and the 4th of July. While speeding peaked on Independence Day, red-light violations were more evenly distributed across all three holidays. However, one common factor emerged: the afternoon hours (2-5 pm) saw the most red-light and speeding violations during each of these holidays.
