Protecting Children Means Protecting Privacy Too
June 11, 2026Los Angeles is taking a major step toward reducing traffic deaths and dangerous speeding, and Verra Mobility is proud to help lead the effort.

The Los Angeles City Council officially awarded Verra Mobility the contract to design, build, operate, and maintain a citywide speed safety program that will become the largest of its kind in California. Working alongside the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), Verra Mobility will implement speed safety systems at 125 locations across the city, focusing on corridors with a history of speeding-related crashes and serious injuries.
The program is part of California’s Assembly Bill 645 pilot initiative, which enables select cities to use speed safety technology to address one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities: excessive speeding.
A Data-Driven Approach to Saving Lives
The 125 locations were carefully selected using traffic safety data, including information on speeding behavior and crash history. Many sites will include multiple camera approaches to help reduce speeding in both directions and encourage safer driving habits throughout the community.
For Los Angeles, the need is urgent. According to the city’s Speed Safety System Impact Report, speeding contributed to 16% of all fatal and severe crashes between 2017 and 2021. In 2024 alone, more than 300 people lost their lives in traffic collisions across Los Angeles, with speeding responsible for one in five of those deaths.
By targeting the most dangerous corridors, city leaders hope to create meaningful behavior change and reduce preventable tragedies on local streets.
Bringing Proven Experience to Los Angeles
Verra Mobility brings extensive experience in automated traffic enforcement programs across North America, including speed safety initiatives already operating in San Francisco and Oakland.
Communities that have implemented speed safety technology have seen significant reductions in dangerous driving behavior. In some locations, speeding violations have decreased by as much as 94%. In San Francisco, residents recently credited the city’s speed safety program with contributing to a 50% reduction in traffic fatalities and an 80% decline in speeding during its first year.
“These programs are highly effective at reducing dangerous driving,” said Vice President Will Barnow. “We’re honored that the City of Los Angeles has placed its trust in Verra Mobility, and we’re excited to work together toward our shared goal of safer streets for millions of Angelenos.”
Building Community Trust Through Safety and Transparency
As part of the program, the program will include strong, robust privacy protections as AB 645 has some of the most secure provisions within its legislation. The program will only take still footage, capture only license plate information (no facial recognition), and includes a short retention time frame.
The program will also run in accordance with Verra Mobility’s and the law’s data sharing policy: confidential data will not be shared with local, state, or federal law enforcement unless compelled by a court order.
Advancing a Shared Vision for Safer Communities
Every day, communities across the country face the devastating consequences of speeding-related crashes. By combining proven technology, data-driven decision-making, and strong community partnerships, Los Angeles is investing in a safer future for everyone who uses its streets.
Verra Mobility is proud to support that vision and help create safer roadways for the millions of residents, workers, and visitors who travel throughout Los Angeles each day.
