In 2023, 1 in 5 vehicles sold globally was electric, a 35% increase from 2022. However, in 2024, many experts raised concerns about slowing EV adoption rates and news headlines portrayed a troubled industry.
But, our recent survey found 47% of Americans plan to purchase an EV in the next 5 years, with 21% planning to purchase one in the next 1-2 years.
To learn more about perceptions, trends and concerns, we partnered with survey company Pollfish to poll 2,000 Americans 25 years and older.
Our second annual survey - The State of EVs: 2025 Smart Mobility Report - found that 51% would purchase an EV today if upfront cost was not a factor. Only 7% of the respondents said they currently own an EV.
Many respondents felt they needed to become more familiar with the technology. 73% said they wouldn't know how to charge an EV if they rented one today.
In fact, renting an EV is an excellent option for learning more about the technology and how to operate the car. 70% of our survey respondents said they would consider renting an EV as a way to "try before they buy" if they were considering a purchase.
"Although there have been market indications that EV adoption rates are slowing down, our analysis indicates steady, albeit more cautious adoption and interest," said Steve Lalla, executive vice president of Verra Mobility's Commercial Services business.
