Automated Traffic Safety Cameras: Trust Prevails Controversy
June 3, 2026By Matt Reich, head of growth and development, Verra Mobility School Bus Stop Arm Safety Division

Every day, communities across the country trust school transportation providers and safety technology partners with one of their most important responsibilities: protecting children.
At Verra Mobility, that responsibility extends beyond helping deter dangerous stop-arm violations. It also includes protecting the privacy, security, and integrity of the data collected through school bus safety programs.
Recently, there has been growing public discussion, media stories, and warnings about how some school bus camera technology programs are used for broader surveillance purposes unrelated to student safety.
Let me be clear – those are NOT Verra Mobility school bus programs.
These stories have understandably raised important questions for school districts, transportation leaders, parents, and communities about how student-related data and imagery are handled — and who ultimately has access to it.
At Verra Mobility, we believe those questions deserve clear answers.
Our Commitment Is Simple: Student Safety, Not Surveillance
Our school bus stop-arm safety programs are designed for one purpose: helping protect children from illegal and dangerous passing vehicles.
That mission does not include turning school buses into generalized surveillance platforms.
We understand that the images, video, and data collected through school bus safety programs involve a high level of trust. School districts, transportation providers, and families expect that information to be handled responsibly, securely, and ethically.
That is why Verra Mobility does not share school bus stop-arm program data, images, or video with third parties for unrelated surveillance or law enforcement purposes.
We believe the role of school bus stop-arm technology is narrowly defined and should remain focused on roadway safety and accountability related to stop-arm violations.
Privacy and Security Are Foundational to Our Programs
Privacy protections are not an afterthought at Verra Mobility. They are foundational to how our programs are designed and operated.
We recognize that school transportation environments are uniquely sensitive. Students, parents, school districts, and communities deserve confidence that the technology deployed around children is being used responsibly.
That means:
- Limiting data access to authorized personnel involved in the administration of stop-arm safety programs
- Maintaining strong data security and handling protocols
- Ensuring collected information is used only for its intended safety purpose
- Working closely with school districts and municipal partners to uphold privacy expectations and legal requirements
- Being transparent about how safety technology is used
In an era of growing concerns about digital privacy, maintaining public trust is critical.
Safety Technology Must Be Paired With Public Trust
School bus stop-arm enforcement technology has proven effective in helping reduce dangerous driving behavior around stopped school buses. But the long-term success of these programs depends on more than technology alone.
It depends on trust.
Parents should not have to wonder whether school bus cameras are being repurposed for broader surveillance activities unrelated to student safety. Communities should feel confident that safety programs are operating with clear boundaries and responsible governance.
At Verra Mobility, we take that responsibility seriously.
We believe safety and privacy are not competing priorities. They must go hand in hand.
As conversations around transportation technology continue to evolve, we remain committed to protecting students while also protecting the trust placed in us by schools, families, and communities across the country.
Because when it comes to children’s safety, protecting privacy matters too.
