Understanding the Dangers of Distracted Driving: Insights from Recent Survey Results
April 2, 2025
As a leader in traffic safety technology, Verra Mobility recently conducted a comprehensive speed study in Clay County, Florida, that uncovered patterns of dangerous driving behavior in school zones. The results are a stark reminder of the critical need for enhanced speed enforcement and public awareness.
The Startling Statistics
Our three-day study across 12 local schools painted a picture of illegal driver behavior:
- Over 6,000 potential speeding violations were recorded in just 72 hours
- An alarming 2,148 vehicles were caught traveling more than 20 mph over the posted school zone speed limit
- Even with flashing beacons clearly signaling reduced speed requirements, drivers continued to put children at risk
High-Risk School Zones Identified
Three schools emerged as particular hotspots for dangerous driving:
- Ridgeview High School
- St. Johns Classic Academy
- Doctors Inlet Elementary School
These locations alone accounted for 4,108 of the potential speed violations – a number that should shock every parent and community member.
The Most Dangerous Speeders
The most troubling findings reveal extreme speeding that puts young lives in immediate danger:
- 551 vehicles were recorded traveling 60+ mph in school zones
- 36 vehicles were clocked at speeds exceeding 70 mph
A Call to Action
These statistics are more than just numbers – they represent real risks to our children’s safety. Every vehicle speeding through a school zone is a potential tragedy waiting to happen.
